The UVA Hockey Team defeated the reigning ACCHL champion George Washington University 6-5 in overtime after overcoming a 3-0 deficit halfway through the game. The Colonials took charge early scoring twice in the first period and adding a power play goal in the second before the Hoos responded on a goal by second-year Nic Tuzinkiewicz midway through the second period. With nine seconds remaining in the second, fifth-year Jordan Friedman scored a pivotal goal to cut GW’s lead to one on a two-man advantage power play.
The third period would see the momentum shift back and forth several times after leading goal scorer Kevin McCollum would tie the game with just over six minutes remaining in regulation. GW would respond quickly to recapture the lead with five minutes left, but half a minute later, the score was tied on an impressive effort by first-year forward Josh Katz. Once more, the Colonials would regain the lead, but in the final minute of regulation, McCollum would register his second goal to even the score and send the game to overtime.
Overtime would not last long as fourth-year captain Dan Glavin would finish a golden opportunity set up by McCollum and Tuzinkiewicz just 25 seconds into the extra frame. With the assist, McCollum would finish with an eye-popping five points on the night. The Hoos outshot the Colonials 56-30 and look to carry their momentum into their next game against rival James Madison University on Friday, Feb. 3rd at Main Street Arena.
