The Men’s Ice Hockey Club at the University of Virginia is an ACHA Division II team competing in the ACCHL. The team plays approximately 20 games a year–––their home games are played at Main Street Arena, less than 2 miles from Grounds.

What level is hockey at the University of Virginia?

Virginia Hockey is a member of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) and plays in the Division II level.  Within the ACHA, Virginia is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference Hockey League (ACCHL).

Who plays Virginia hockey?

Virginia hockey is for players who are looking to continue playing at a very competitive level, while still having enough time for social and educational activities. The team consists of former Junior and high school players from across the East Coast and Mid-West.

What teams does Virginia play?

In additional to ACCHL league games versus: Georgetown, George Washington, Navy, Duke, North Carolina, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Elon, and High Point; Virginia plays other local Universities: including but not limited to Liberty, Radford, Richmond, George Mason and James Madison. As well, Virginia faces rival Virginia Tech. The schedule year to year varies depending on dates.

How many games each season?

The team plays between 16-20 games a year.

When are games?

Games are on the weekends and do not conflict with student classes.

Where does Virginia play?

All home games at practices are at Main Street Arena in Charlottesville, just over a mile away from grounds.

Are there fans?

Yes, Virginia Hockey is one of the most popular sports teams at UVA. Hundreds of fans pack Main St Arena for home games.

When do tryouts start?

Tryouts will start the first week of classes. Please check the website for dates and times, fill out the Recruiting form, and contact the Team Captains if you are interested in joining the team at (icehockey.execs@virginia.edu).

What do I do with my bag if I am living in the dorms?

During tryouts you will have to keep the bag in your dorm. If you make the team, you may be able to keep your bag at a current player’s house.

How often does the team practice?

The team has two practices per week on Monday nights and Thursday mornings.

How long is the season?

Tryouts start the first week of school and ACCHL playoffs are in mid-February.

What does it cost to play?

Dues will cost approximately $1200. The team works with all players in order to make sure money does not prevent anyone from playing on the team.

What equipment do I need?

The team provides helmets, shells, practice jerseys, game jerseys, and socks. Players are responsible for the rest of their gear.  Players often purchase their own helmet (blue) and gloves (orange/blue).
